For those of you that don't know:
Sandra Bland was found dead in her cell at the Waller County Jail in Houston, Texas, just days after she was detained by police during a routine traffic stop for assaulting a public servant.

You can clearly look at that pic and see that she was already dead in her mug shot!! This is really getting out of hand.. Another mother has to bury her child and this time due to a traffic stop maryluvs_smh.gif

That dashboard cam video is disturbing!

I took a break from the updates cause it's just too upsetting personally. The editing of the dash cam video, to her possibly being dead in the mug shot... Why was she in the prison uniform if she was suppose to be booking? They only give you that after you take your mugshot I thought? Everything she asked the officer was not illegal. You legally have the right to curse a police officer out and they aren't suppose to touch you. Not only that, but digging up old Facebook videos (which I always tell people to be mindful of what you post) to discredit her. And her having marijuana in her system and OLD healed cuts on her arm does not correlate to her wanting to hang herself. Btw, she was going to start a new job in a new town with new people. Who kills themselves when they have all this going?

So the autopsy came back and said that everything is consistent with a suicide.

Then they said that she had marijuana in her system as if that someone made her depressed and want to commit suicide. Bullshit.

As far as the mug shot, they claim that's the mug shot she took and was available immediately after she was booked.

I ain't buying this shit.

The thought of her being dead already while they took her mugshost makes me feel sick to my stomach. I can't take all this injustice. There must something we can do. I think all black people in the USA need to start protesting again like they did in the 60s for a start.

She might have been tasered to death. That would make sense especially since she suffered from epilepsy. That mug shot makes me sick to my stomach every time I look at it. I am 100% certain she was dead in that pic.

I've been mad for days about this tragic case. I can't move on and I refuse to move. All the stuff I am reading online just makes me even more angry. We all need to do something about this, her death will not be in vain. Enough is enough, we as black people should not put up with this or accept it in 2015. We all need to get pro-active and mobilise.

What you are doing is listening to Black Social Media instead of waiting for all the facts to come out. We don't know what that womans state of mind was and if they actually killed her. They keep saying that she was dead in her Mugshot but if that's so how come we don't see the lines around her neck from the noose?

It's a sad situation that she died that way but it's easy to jump to conclusions when we are being force fed information. We can clearly see that she was handled wrong from the arrest but we DON'T know what happened once she was incarcerated. People we saying that they don't process people in jail uniforms and that was a fucking lie because there are several other people who were processed that way and there are pictures to prove it from the same prison.

What makes you sure she died by hanging? They could have lit her up like they promised. A lot o things don't add up in this case and I don't trust anything the police and media are reporting.

Even if she did commit suicide, they killed her indirectly. The treatment she received while being arrested is enough to protest about, God only knows what happened when the cameras stopped rolling. This kind of behaviour by the police should not be accepted. Why was she in prison for 3 days for a minor traffic violation?

Over the past few days I have watched so many black people shot dead or tasered by police for flinching or motioning in any kind of way. This is just unacceptable.

She was being held for assault on a public servant. She couldn't post bail because it was $5,000. She called her "friend" multiple times and at one point he told her he'd be there in 1 hour and three days later he still hadn't showed up and now he's feeling guilty listening to her voice mails.

Julius doesn't know what happened because Julius wasn't there. BUT I am interested in facts. I jumped to conclusions about TrayVon Martin and it's evident TrayVon got upset for being followed and attacked George. Does that mean George had a right to kill him? What would you have done being attacked. You would have done whatever was necessary to protect yourself.

There is always a host of shoulda, coulda, wouldas. What if Sandra would have just put out the cigarette? What if George would have never followed TrayVon like the the Officer's told him?

As Sandra Bland is laid to rest on Saturday, questions about the circumstances of her death continue to swirl. Here are nine questions people are still asking about Bland, the activist who was found dead in a Texas jail cell three days after being arrested during a traffic stop. Authorities have ruled Bland’s death suicide by hanging. Both the traffic stop and Bland’s death are under investigation.

RELATED: Sandra Bland to be laid to rest as scrutiny continues

1. Why was Sandra Bland photographed in an orange jumpsuit, rather than in her street clothes?

A July 23 press release from the Waller County Sheriff’s office stated that when a prisoner is taken into the jail:

“The inmate is walked to the booking area where they are processed by the booking officer. Depending on how many inmates are being processed at this time, an inmate’s photograph may be taken in their original clothing or the inmate may be dressed out in orange. Their photograph is taken on the wall south of the booking officer’s desk. We should note that if the inmate is not standing directly in the center of the backdrop, a portion of the white wall may appear.”

Paul C. Looney, a trial attorney who practices in Waller County and Houston and who has been named by the Waller County Sheriff R. Glenn Smith to lead a task force on jail procedures, told msnbc the jumpsuit vs. street clothes question “could go either way.” He said that of his clients who have been booked into Waller County jail, “Typically [the booking photos] were taken in their own clothes, if there was somebody available to do it when they first walked in. In booking photos of my clients, I’ve seen it both ways.”

2. Why did an officer fill out the intake forms, rather than Bland herself, and why did her answers on suicide change?

The intake form, on which Bland indicated a past suicide attempt, but in which she also indicated she was not suicidal at the time, was filled out by the booking officer, as is customary in most jails. According to the July 23 press release from the Waller County Sheriff’s office: “Inmates are brought into the Waller County Jail intake section by the arresting officer. The arresting officer completes a Jail Book-in sheet and inventories the arrestee’s property. Jail staff meets with the arrestee and arresting officer and completes a Screening form for Suicide and Medical and Mental Impairments form and Texas Department of State Health Services Correctional Tuberculosis form. These forms are provided to the main control supervisor prior to the inmate being accepted.”

The release stated that any discrepancy in the information on the forms indicates that the inmate changed his or her answer.

3. Why wasn’t Bland placed on suicide watch?

An autopsy indicated marks on Bland’s wrists that are consistent with healing scars from past incidents of self-cutting. And the intake form indicated a past suicide attempt. Bland’s family reported that earlier this year, Bland had been distraught over the loss of a pregnancy, though the family has strongly disputed the notion that she committed suicide in jail. The Waller County Sherrif’s office acknowledged in the July 23 release that “Ms. Bland, based on Jail staff’s observations, was not placed on any formal suicide watch.”

Two women who were being housed in an adjacent cell have told local news media that Bland was distraught on Sunday night, the second night she spent in the jail, and that they wished that she had been housed with them, rather than by herself. One of the women, Alexandria Pyle, indicated that Bland was distraught that her calls to a friend who was supposed to be helping her meet the 10% requirement for her $5,000 bail had not been returned. (Bland left a voicemail for a friend, LaVaughn Morris, before she died.) And while Pyle told the local news outlet that she wished Bland had been housed with her and the other women rather than alone, according to the Sheriff’s office release, she was placed in cell 95, which was classified as a “medium to maximum security cell,” due to the offense she was charged with: assault on a law enforcement officer. The other women were being jailed on offenses in a different classification. The Waller County Sheriff’s office has admitted that there were issues with the jail staff’s training and protocols for checking regularly on inmates, but said they do not believe those factors contributed to Bland’s death.

4. Why was there a plastic trash can liner in Sandra Bland’s cell?

Most law enforcement professionals assert that when a prisoner is taken to jail, anything in their possession that could be used to harm themselves or others is taken away. Based on a press release from the Waller County Sheriff’s office, this jail is no different. Authorities have said Bland hanged herself with a plastic trash can liner that was in her cell.

“You know, as soon as I heard that I wondered what the hell was that doing there,” Looney said of the presence of the plastic bag. “I read a piece somewhere that said that they had been instructed to have liners in the trash cans, per a previous inspection. I guess I don’t understand why they would do that.”

A Texas Tribune article reported that hanging is the most common method of suicide in Texas jails, with bed linens, clothing, telephone or electrical cords and trash bags all having been used by inmates in the past. (Incidentally, of the 140 suicide deaths in Texas jails since 2009, Bland is the lone African-American woman among 15 female deaths.) The Waller County jail was cited by the state after a 2012 incident in which an inmate hung himself.

Elton Mathis, the Waller County district attorney, and his team have submitted the trash can liner found in Bland’s cell for further forensic analysis.

5. Was the death scene altered?

Photographs of Cell 95 from two different news outlets, including NBC News, show apparent alterations of the scene where Sandra Bland died. In one photograph, a pair of orange slippers, which can also be seen worn by a male inmate in the video of the EMS response to the discovery of Sandra Bland’s body, are at the foot of one of the beds in the cell, and a closed Bible is visible on the bed:

In another photo, the slippers are gone, and the Bible is open. The Waller County Sheriff’s office has not explained this discrepancy.

6. Could Sandra Bland have ingested marijuana in jail?

Bland was arrested on July 10 and held for three days. Toxicology tests during her autopsy showed the presence of a significant quantity of marijuana, according to the district attorney’s office. But the assistant district attorney, Warren Diepraam, on Thursday raised the possibility that Bland may have consumed or even smoked marijuana while she was inside the Waller County jail. Looney said that assertion “struck me as odd then, strikes me as odd now.” He said it seemed implausible that any inmate, having had their personal effects removed at intake, could have taken drugs with them into their cell, let alone used them undetected while inside their cell. Diepraam himself indicated on Thursday that no other inmates reported smelling marijuana while Bland was being held at the jail. And Diepraam indicated that THC, the principal drug component of marijuana, could have been in Ms. Bland’s system before her arrest, in sufficient quantities to still be detectable after several days.

It should be noted that to many legal experts, the issue of marijuana is irrelevant, and many Black Lives Matter movement supporters believe the district attorney’s focus on drugs is meant to disparage the deceased.

7. Why wasn’t Bland’s epilepsy tested for or treated?

Bland’s intake form included a check mark for “yes” on epilepsy, and she can be heard on the police dashcam video telling the arresting officer that she suffered from the illness. However, the autopsy did not include a test for epilepsy, and the sheriff’s office said Bland “was offered Emergency Medical Services prior to being transported to the jail” but that she “refused any medical treatment.”

8. Was there evidence that Sandra Bland was injured during the arrest?

The autopsy did indicate lacerations on Ms. Bland’s back that were consistent with a knee potentially being applied to her back, and the remnants of a leaf lodged in one of the lacerations on her back. Lacerations on her wrist were consistent with the application of handcuffs.

9. Why has no action been taken against the arresting officer?

The arresting officer, trooper Brian Encina, has been placed on desk duty, and the Texas Department of Public Safety has stated publicly that he violated departmental policies in his conduct during the traffic stop. At this time, the Texas Rangers and DPS are conducting their own investigations into the traffic stop, as is a different assistant district attorney, Mia Magnus, who would be activated in the event that criminal violations are found. That investigation is separate from the Sandra Bland death investigation. District Attorney Mathis has said no evidence of criminal behavior has been uncovered so far.

Asking a woman sitting inside of her vehicle to put out her cigarette during a traffic stop is not a reasonable request for an officer to make and Sandra Bland knew it.

“You mind putting out your cigarette, please?,” Officer Brian Encinia asked.

“I’m in my car. Why do I have to put out my cigarette?” Bland replied.

“Well, you can step on out now,” Officer Encinia replies.

We know what happened next, based on a dashcam video released by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Bland was violently pulled out of her vehicle, thrown to the ground after she refused to obey Encinia’s “lawful order” and jailed at Waller County Jail, where she was found dead three days later under suspicious circumstances.

But let’s address this cigarette issue. Did Officer Encinia have a right to ask her to put it out? Eric Sanders, a former NYPD officer and civil rights attorney, told AlterNet flatly, “No.”

“What law was he enforcing?,” Sanders, who spent nearly 13 years years with the NYPD, asked. “Is there a law against her smoking a cigarette in her own car? The police only have power through the Constitution, so can you explain to me what was the legal basis for that command? The government can only tell you, as a citizen, to do something that has legal authority. Without legal authority, they have nothing. So tell me what did she do?”

Eric Guster, a civil rights attorney in Birmingham, Ala., says officers can ask drivers to comply with reasonable commands. For example, a cop can ask a driver to turn off the ignition to his or her vehicle because not doing so can endanger the officer’s safety. If a car has a lot of people in it, that officer can ask everyone to raise their hands so he or she can see them. The officer can also ask someone to turn on his or her car lights if the inside of the vehicle is dark.

After reviewing the video, Guster says Officer Encinia’s request was far from reasonable.

“I just don’t think so,” he told AlterNet. “He wrote the ticket already. She said, ‘Give me the ticket.’ The officer had no reason to tell her anything else but give her the ticket and walk away. There can be a thin line about what is a legal command, but under these circumstances, I just don’t see what the officer did was reasonable.”

The Houston Chronicle published a report outlining Texas-specific rights officers have to stop a driver and when it is legal for the officer to ask passengers to exit the vehicle. None of the scenarios cited in the report suggest any wrongdoing on Bland’s part.

Walter Katz, a police oversight lawer and monitor, wrote that Officer Encinia escalated the situation after Bland accused him of speeding in back of her, forcing her to switch lanes hastily without using her signal. Basically, she accused Encinia of creating the conditions that caused him to pull her over. He never explained the legality of his commands and all Bland did was challenge why he didn’t.

I've been following the case and of course reading these different theories and everything.

I don't know all the laws and won't pretend to. I believe that YES, the Officer pursued Sandra and escalated the situation. It went south when he aksed her if she had a problem and she told him what he problem was. I really didn't even see an issue with her not signaling because it wasn't a lot of traffic and let's be honest, how many us go one lane over without using a signal? Most of us right? I see it often, even on Busy highways. She probably was nervous and just wanted to know why he was on her ass. It wasn't as if she ran a Red Light or Stop Sign or was speeding in a school zone.

Wait, what? I didn't think much about her mugshot being in a jail uniform, but you're absolutely right. Ain't this some shit?!?.....

...and I also agree that this "suicide" is suspect. No one with all this going for them commits suicide.

Shame. A storm is coming.

I was listening to Tavis Smiley's radio show the other day. Someone called in basically saying this. People are growing sick and tired of seeing black men and now women being killed by the police. Like the caller said, they are going to kill the right one and its going to spark more than marches in this country. Fergueson and Baltimore were just samples of what's to come. #staywoke

The video shows her being booked, changing into her jail jump suit and THEN having her Mug shot taken. This dispels rumors that they took it after they killed her. Now what happened in her cell is something else but it's clear as day that she was NOT dead in her Mug shot. Them posting doctored pictures with her eyes rolled back, saying she was on the floor, saying that her shoulder were too straight and all that shit...those were lies.

Never thought the police department would be THAT bold to take a mugshot of a dead individual, because that would be toooooo many people to keep quiet. Even though I think the mugshot does look a little strange.

Posted by: Luchiano Jul 29 2015, 05:43 AM
They had just waken her up. They actually took two seperate sets of mugshots but the one they released looks like the one that they took after they had waken her up. They had her in a holding cell. Looking on Social media people have come up with other fabrications saying that it isn't her and the person is the video is shorter, fatter and has a fro. Some people just hate to be wrong. After they've reposted her mugshot saying she was dead when clearly she wasn't they have to find another explanation.

Bland's family has previously challenged that conclusion, and in the federal lawsuit filed in Houston, accused Trooper Brian Encinia of "wanton conduct" and assault that violated Bland's constitutional rights. The 46-page lawsuit further alleges the Waller County Sheriff's Office and guards at the jail failed to adequately monitor and protect the Naperville, Illinois, woman while she was under their watch prior to her death.

But when asked at the news conference if she still believed her daughter did not kill herself, Bland's mother Geneva Reed-Veal said: "I am still confident in the fact that she knew enough about Jesus that she would not take herself out," reports the Chicago Tribune.

She added: "Anything is possible. I wasn't there. But as a mother, my inner [voice] is telling me that she did not do that. Now I'm the first one to tell you, if the facts ... show without a doubt that that was the case, I'll have to be prepared to deal with that."

They had a street renamed after Sandra bland today. The way her mother spoke broke my heart but gave me some hope in a strange way. She said, "for those that don't like to see a black face, a black name or anyone that looks different from them, you have to say her name everyday." Powerful.

A grand jury has decided no felony crime was committed in connection with Sandra Bland, a black woman who was found dead in her cell in a Texas jail earlier this year.

The jury met for the third time in six weeks to decide whether the Waller County sheriff’s office had a case to answer over the death of Ms Bland, who was found hanged in her police cell in July three days after being pulled over for a minor traffic violation.

She had been pulled over by a Texas state trooper for making an improper lane change. Police say dashcam footage showed her becoming aggressive. She was then arrested for assault.

She was taken to the county jail in Hempstead, about 50 miles north-west of Houston and was forced to remain there because she could not raise the $500 (£335) bail.

Prosecutor Darrell Johnson said the grand jury had failed to decide whether to indict the state trooper who made the original arrest and it will return in January to consider it again.

Ms Bland’s relatives have questioned the verdict from the medical examiner that she killed herself.

Cannon Lambert, the attorney for the 28-year-old’s family said the grand jury decision was “disappointing” and consistent with what they believe is a cover up by the Texan authorities.

In a press conference on Monday before the verdict was made public, Ms Bland’s mother Geneva Reed-Veal said: “Right now the biggest problem I have is the entire process. It's the secrecy of it all.”
