Gaza facing 'critical emergency'

The UN has warned that Palestinians in Gaza are facing a serious health and food crisis, as Israeli air strikes continued for a seventh day.

The "critical emergency" comes despite an increase in humanitarian shipments, said Maxwell Gaylard, the UN's chief aid co-ordinator for the territory.

The UN believes that at least 100 of some 400 Palestinians killed by Israeli action so far were civilians.

Israel said Gazans were continuing to receive sufficient food and medicines.

In a statement, the Israeli foreign ministry said that since the beginning of the campaign, 335 truckloads of humanitarian aid (7,800 tonnes) had been delivered into Gaza.

It said it was working with international organisations in Gaza as well as various governments "in order to assess the humanitarian needs... and make the necessary response".

The UN's Maxwell Gaylard said: "It is true supplies have been going into the Strip, in fact possibly more than in previous weeks, but at the same time there are critical gaps."

A leading international charity, Oxfam, which has a programme in Gaza, warned the situation "is getting worse by the day", with clean water, fuel and food in short supply.

It said hospitals were overwhelmed with casualties, and reported that raw sewage was pouring into the streets in some areas.

Israel tightened its control of what gets in and out of the crowded coastal Strip after Hamas, the elected power, seized control of the area from rival Fatah forces 18 months ago.

Since then the UN says there has been a significant deterioration in infrastructure and basic services, with 80% of the 1.4m population unable to support themselves.

'Tacit backing'

Five Palestinians, including three children, have been killed in the latest Israeli air attacks. The Israel Defense Forces have attacked more than 500 Hamas targets in Gaza since the campaign began.

To date, some 2,000 Palestinians have been wounded, according to the UN.

It is a horrid situation. A nation that had to endure holocaust should know better. maryluvs_bye2.gif And the US, of course, is the only country in the UN Security Council blocking any decisions in that regard.

Its funny how the western world turns a blind eye to Israeli aggression. What the Israelis have done to the Palestinians is no better than what Hitler did to the Jews, it just more subtle and longer lasting. Slow but steady ethnic cleansing. They have already stuffed the popultion in their camps (the minute wastelands of Gaza and the West Bank) after having taken over the land, wealth and resources, and then the world wonders why muslims turn to terrorism? maryluvs_smh.gif maryluvs_smh.gif maryluvs_smh.gif maryluvs_smh.gif

maryluvs_excl.gif Nothing subtle about that.

The western world is the BIGGEST beneficiary to whats going on, thats why they're quite and pleased. You think what REALLY happend in Rwanda is just a friction between 2 tribes? You know what time it is. The middle east & Africa are indisputably the RICHEST territories in the world for 1000s of years, all you gotta do is look up the history.

The bigger the conflicts, the fatter the outcomes that the western world reaps.

I dont know why are you all talking about the "Western world". maryluvs_huhh.gif The European countries have said their word. It was diametrically opposite of what the US did say. Blame the U.S., not the Western World. dry.gif

This is getting ridiculous. Israel is now breaking international humanitarian law and possibly committing war crimes.

Israeli forces shelled a house in the Gaza Strip which they had moved around 110 Palestinians into 24 hours earlier, the UN quotes witnesses as saying.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) called it "one of the gravest incidents" since the beginning of the offensive.

The shelling at Zeitoun, a south-east suburb of Gaza City, on 5 January killed some 30 people, the report said.

Israel said the allegations were being investigated.

"According to several testimonies, on 4 January Israeli foot soldiers evacuated approximately 110 Palestinians into a single-residence house in Zeitoun (half of whom were children) warning them to stay indoors," the OCHA report said.

"Twenty-four hours later, Israeli forces shelled the home repeatedly, killing approximately 30."

The UN said those who survived and were able walked 2km to the main north-south road to be transported to hospital in civilian vehicles.

"Three children, the youngest of whom was five months old, died upon arrival at the hospital," the report said.

And in unusually strong terms the International Red Cross today criticised Israel after finding four emaciated children among a group of corpses in a house just metres from an Israeli military position.

The ICRC chief in Gaza accused the Israelis of breaching international humanitarian law in what he called this "shocking incident".

Israel's prime minister today alluded that Israel is not subject to international law. Anyone who follows politics will know this is a big big deal - without international law, we are nothing but barbarians.

This is simply unbelievable. It is beginning to look a lot like genocide maryluvs_smh.gif maryluvs_bye2.gif

This is an OUTRAGE! ohmy.gif maryluvs_mad.gif

Nothing about this is being reported in U.S. media. I haven't heard much about the crisis in Gaza since last week. The main talk here is the inaguration, the economy, and Blogojevich. The Gaza Crisis has been pushed completely off the front page.

hmmm... I wonder why dry.gif
Israel has also prevented any journalists (as well as essential humanitarian aid) from entering Gaza. Even UN aid workers were injured by Israeli fire

As it stands, the US is the only nation in the world who has come out in support of Israel.
President Bush blamed Palestine exclusively for the war and blocked any UN resolution against it. As far as I know, all Obama has said is that he does not share Bush's view.

Eventually, in the face of international pressure, the US backed down saying it would not to block any resolution. But bizarrely, when it came to the vote, the US abstained from the vote. Literally every other nation on the face of the planet condemned Israel, and America stayed silent. blink.gif
